What do you want to be when you grow up? Do you love your job and can’t wait to get there on Monday morning or are you contemplating a career change? Beyond your work in the world at present, do you feel on purpose, focused and knowing you are sharing your unique gifts and talents with the world? Did you realize that your home can help you sort out all of these major, real life choices? The Feng Shui Bagua area for Career is a wonderful pool of insight, inspiration and direction. Let’s dive in.
A major tool of Feng Shui, the Bagua Map represents the vital energy, or Ch’i, in nine general areas of your life. The Bagua’s grid, similar to a tic tac toe board, is placed over your home’s floor plan to designate each area. As you stand at your front door facing inside, the Career area, or gua, lies in the center third of the front of your home.
Define Your Own Feng Shui Bagua Map

You can get started utilizing the wisdom of this fabulous resource by creating your own Bagua Map. It is one of the first things I do when meeting with any Client. Download my free Feng Shui Bagua Map now. Instructions for placement are included.
To help you more easily utilize and understand your Bagua, I’ve prepared a special series on the Feng Shui Bagua Map. From how to Draw Your Floor Plan to advanced tips for How to Place the Bagua to ways to read this Feng Shui Road Map, these posts can answer a lot of your questions.
Associated not only with a job or career, this area addresses our life’s work or life’s path. Also included is our life’s journey and life purpose on a more spiritual level. This is the area that helps us connect with our personal genius so we can discover and follow our deepest passion.
Although the name of this gua may seem self-explanatory, don’t look to this area only for Feng Shui assistance with your work or career. We all benefit when we broaden our vision of the Career gua and utilize it to ignite our personal guidance system. It can help us uncover a more accurate understanding of our deepest calling, our mission in life, especially when it is needed to keep us on track in our lives.
Define Your Feng Shui Intention for Career
We can all use the Bagua Map to help improve and generate energy that can be used to support the resolution of a challenge or the advancement of a goal. Simply choose the gua related to the issue at hand and apply the appropriate Feng Shui remedy.
Be aware that each Bagua area has a different set of remedies that apply. Visit my individual posts on any of the nine guas for the specific recommendations of that area.
Step one is a clear intention of the change you would like to generate. Then the outer world of our environment and the inner world of our intentions can most effectively join to create an auspicious result.
Take a closer look at your home’s Career gua when:
- You are looking for a job
- A new job or career is just starting
- You’ve gotten a promotion at work or there is another change in your employment
- Deep inner work on discovering your purpose in life is desired
- It’s a transitional time in your life and you are restructuring your focus
- You are considering or just entering retirement
- The last child is moving out of the home and there is concern about an empty nest
- Community service or volunteering opportunities are sought
- You would like to be more tranquil and able to more easily adjust to changes
- There is a health issue with the ears, balance or hearing
- Hemorrhoids are a concern
- Reproductive or other sexual organ illness is present
- Your general level of life force is depleted and needs to be rebuilt
- Communication needs to be improved
- Too much rigidity is stifling a natural progression of affairs
- The middle son in the household requires additional support
Place a Feng Shui Enhancement for Career
To acknowledge your intention and begin to draw additional auspicious Ch’i to you in this area, place a specific Feng Shui enhancement in the Career gua. Here are a few suggestions that would be suitable here:

- Items that represent your career such as a business card, website URL, company logo or other reminder
- Photos of you doing your job
- Reference to a mentor or other influence that is important to your work
- Books and magazines about your profession or the latest trends in your industry
The irregular pattern of the flowers and the deep navy background color make this rug a good enhancement for the Career gua. - Things that express your life’s mission or purpose in life
- Artwork with a water subject such as waterfalls, lakes, oceans or rivers
- The colors black or the very darkest tones of any color
- Free-flowing, decorative items such as unstructured draperies or irregularly shaped rugs
- Random patterns in fabrics, art or other features
- Cut crystal glass items or other glass accessories
- Mirrors (see specific instructions below)
- Water features like a water fountain or aquarium
- Asymmetrical arrangements of furniture or decorative items
- An affirmation expressing the highest vision of your career or life purpose
Special Considerations for Feng Shui Mirrors and Windows

The placement of any mirror requires special care in Feng Shui. Hang them at a height that will allow any adult in the household to see their full head in the mirror.
Especially when used for decorative purposes, I have seen Clients frequently put mirrors too high, leaving only the top half of their head visible in the reflection.
Viewing yourself as incomplete or less than whole for an extended period of time can degrade self-image and confidence.
You may have heard of Feng Shui Bagua mirrors. Eight sided, they are usually only 4-6” wide and often have a painted wooden edge. I consider them a separate subject from mirrors in general and highly recommend you place them only on the advice of a trained Feng Shui practitioner.
An abundance of window glass can certainly count as your enhancement in the Career area. Be sure it is clean, clear and free of cracks. This is very important whether the window is here or in any other Bagua area.

Hi Carol,
I am a Real Estate Broker. I want to implement Feng Shui in my business.
What color do you suggest for Buyers?
What color for Sellers?
I appreciate your suggestion.
Thank you,
Denise, rather than a particular generalized color for buyers and sellers, activating the Feng Shui Bagua Map for each party can more fully focus Ch’i energy on the process. My post, Use Feng Shui To Buy Real Estate, covers many Feng Shui tips about finding a home. I suggest sellers focus on their current home’s Center, Wealth and Prosperity and Helpful People and Travel Bagua areas.
To utilize Feng Shui in your business, consider having a Feng Shui consultation on your office. You may also be interested in my post, Feng Shui Your Closing. I’d love to hear how you use Feng Shui and your results.
Hi,
I work for an insurance broker as the marketing manager. I would like to get more clients on board as this is my role in the company. There are times I try very hard to close the account but am not successful.
Please advise.
Dave, Feng Shui is an excellent tool to add to your mix. Take a look at your office, making sure it is clutter free, clean and organized. One Feng Shui remedy for adding new clients is to clear out your files, removing “old” projects and contacts that are no longer needed. Next, check that your desk is in the Power Position. Try these strategies, while focusing your intention for more clients, and look for results. You can also contact me to add a Feng Shui Office Consultation, and we can apply the Bagua Map and add enhancements. Please let me know how this goes for you.
Our company has experienced a significant growth spurt in the last 5 years; it afforded my family the opportunity to buy a new home but unfortunately I did not handle the stress well and was forced to take a step back within the company. What can I do to refresh my career gua and ride out this storm to land back on top.
Jonet, when i washed the windows in my Career area I got an inquiry the next day! Identify where your Career area lies in your home. If any of the area is outside, make one of the adjustments mentioned in What Shape are You In. Inside the home, work to make that space an area you really love, that makes you feel good. Add your Career enhancement and get clear on your intention and look for results. Please let me know how it goes.
I have a blue sectional with a window in my career area. Is there anything else I can do to enhance the career area there. I can’t move the couch anywhere else.
Of course, there are many, many ways to enhance your Career gua. Add something in the Water Element such as glass, shiny objects, a water fountain or even a piece of art with water, especially a waterfall. Create a clear intention for your career and write it on a piece of paper which you place in a red envelope somewhere in this space. These are just a few simple ideas.
Dear Carol,
I have become a fan of you, for your style of practical approach, no fuss over decorating with Chinese feng shui decorations and your articulation on the subject. Therefore trusting I am asking my question at the best place I can get my doubts cleared. My career Area has half the kitchen in part and an open balcony in the remainder, the kitchen occupying larger part. This part also has the sink opposite my gas stove. I say ‘this part” cause part of my kitchen falls in North West which has the microwave and refrigerator. My husband definitely needs a career boost as of 4 years ago. Need your advice to address this area, I am a stay at home mom
Thanks for your complement Ritu. First, treat the balcony as though it is a room inside the home. Decorate, clean and enhance it for Career. If there is a power source this may be a lovely place for a 360 degree water fountain. In the kitchen, keep the stove and oven sparkling clean and well maintained. If the stove is not in the Power Position, place a mirror on the wall over the stove as an adjustment. The stove is a huge symbol of wealth in Feng Shui and so relates directly to career. Your sink/stove placement is not balanced elementally, with the Water Element of the sink in opposition to the Fire Element of the stove. Moderate this by placing something of the Wood Element in between. A bamboo wind chime from the ceiling or a green, blue, jute or sisal rug on the floor in between are a few ideas. Finally, are you and your husband clear regarding intention around his career? Combining this inner clarity with the physical Feng Shui adjustments can magnify results.
Dear Carol,
I have been reading your advice for a long time. My career area falls in the bathroom. I wonder whether i should enhance the water element (element of career area) since the bathroom has already too much water.
Please help me with this.
Thank you for your time.
What an insightful question Electra. Without seeing the actual space, I agree that a bathroom often has an abundance of the Water Element. Look to balance the bathroom with the tips in my Bathroom Feng Shui post, then acknowledge and enhance your personal goals for your career by adding one specific item to the space that acknowledges that goal for you. For example, if you’d like to increase your salary you could add coins or fake money somewhere in the room. If you’d like to move toward a job that is more outdoors oriented a piece of art of a beautiful natural setting could be added. Get the idea? I suggest a small red envelope with your intention for your career be introduced as well.
